Welcome to the Encore!

December 26, 2017by Christopher FreemanNo Comments

Recently we were invited by the Wynn Group for us stay at their follow up hotel to the Wynn, The Encore. Both buildings stand as icons anchoring the north end of the Las Vegas strip. When the Wynn was built, it stood out as a beacon of new design for Las Vegas properties. On the spots where the mid-century art deco properties of the old Flamingo, Stardust, and the Sands, they were being replaced by replicas. Treasure Island came along with it’s Caribbean island theme, the Mirage came along with this desert island theme, Harrah’s celebrated a Mardi Gras theme. Then the Wynn came along and stood on it’s own look. Not following the old trend of Las Vegas mimicry, it’s large reflective, metallic brown monolithic design stood in stark contrast to the other Las Vegas hotels. And still does. It even faced a different direction, facing south-north, whereas most hotels faced east-west or west-east, depending on which side of the strip they were on. It was beautiful and it was completely different. Even the roof line was interesting, the way the building had a swoop to replicate the swooshing wind of the desert sands blowing your money out of your pockets.

The Wynn quickly became the standard for luxury on the strip. It was given a 4-diamond rating by Forbes and 4-Diamond by AAA. (although the Tower Suites are 5-star and Diamond, so step it up!) Not even the Bellagio gets that! The Wynn opened so well, and made so much money, that they decided to build a sister property to follow it up 2 years later. And appropriately, they called it the Encore. Although the Encore follows the Wynn theme, it did so in a slightly different manner. The Wynn has a slightly less overt statement of luxury which adds to its luxurious statement, a perfect case of less is more. But the Encore, was designed to capture the younger wealthy crowd. Where as the Wynn stood out to the old school high rollers, the Encore dealt to the new nouveau riche. The younger crowd with the same amount of money to burn for a bottle of Veuve Clicqout or Dom Perignon in the night club. The thirtysomethings with a couple grand to drop on a weekend in the high rise suite, a cabana by the pool, and black chips at the table. This is going to be a little livelier, a little more rambunctious. And it does so ever so slightly. That’s what I like about the Wynn: its understated luxury appeal. It’s not over-the-top trying to wow you with design. It’s calm cool design simply lulls you into a clean sense of comfort and the notion that it takes a fine eye to recognize luxury.

So we took the Encore up on its offer to come stay for a couple of days. Upon arrival, we leave the bags to the Bellman, and we hop inline to check in. I still wish somebody would come up with a better check in process than standing in this bank teller line waiting to be called next!  Standing there, I noticed an awful lot of children here. It seems there are an awful lot of families checking in at this time, but then again, it was the day after Christmas, so why not. The kids are out of school, the parents are out of work, make that away from work, and why not bring the family down. That is one of the more appealing aspects of the Wynn and the Encore properties is that they are mature enough to make it safe for families and children. You don’t have to worry about walking through the crowd with a couple of under-dressed, under-aged girls walking through or the local bros chugging beer in the walkways blurting out obscenities.

We check in, which was rather effortlessly for our reservation. I was surprised in fact, that they didn’t offer us an upgrade, but it’s OK I would’ve said no anyway. The tower suite is fine for us and I’ll talk about that more in a second. Walking in, the room has a nice sleeping area with a swivel TV wall to separate it from the seating parlor. The Encore theme is cream, tan and brown accented with high gloss lacquer and gold trim. And again it’s very inviting, very comfortable, and feels quite elegant. I love the room electronic lighting controls. This allows you to simply press one button and all the lights in the room come on, the curtains open and luxury welcomes you. There are controls on the walls and bedside tablets to control the lights, temperature, order food, check bank account balances (just kidding on the account balances).

The bathroom is large, with a spacious shower, a rather long tub, dual vanity, bottom of champagne and separate water closet. Oh wait, that was our bottle, didn’t see Nancy put that there. I can’t wait to stay in one of the one bedroom suites with the Jacuzzi tub next time. The dual vanity has plenty of space, and Nancy’s favorite, in-wall TV to watch while doing make-up. Two plush bathrobes and slippers round out the bath luxury.

One of my favorite things about the Wynn room is one TV that swivels between the bed and seating areas. Just a cool feature, one of the things where you don’t really need two TVs that close to one another.  The room has some nice artwork to it, nothing that stands out so bold as as dogs playing poker on velvet, and the lighting fixtures are high end art pieces themselves. The high ceilings give the 745 sq-ft room an even larger feel and undermount lighting on the cabinets provide a nice warmth to the room.

After we call the Bellman up and gather our  bags, another totally polite fellow, we head down to further decompress. The Lobby Bar and Cafe is at the base of the elevators. This is great as it allows you to simply go down take a few steps and sit down at the bar. You don’t have to go trotting through the lobby, cross through the casino to get a drink. Again I like my luxury nice and easy. We grab a late night bite to eat to rejuvenate ourselves with a couple of cocktails to build up our courage to hit the tables. Short rib fries with caramelized red onions, some sort of exotic tasting sauce (sorry… I forget the details) and feta cheese (who could forget that!). Very tasty, was tempted to order a second round but decided to eat light at that point. I did decide to follow the lead of the Infomercial for Encore and try the Sinatra Smash. It’s a bourbon-based drink with extra grenadine and some juice. Sorry, but this was just a little too sweet for me. I couldn’t imagine Ol’ Blue Eyes taking something like this down. Maybe his date, I could definitely see Debbie Reynolds knocking a few back though. My wife orders a delicious St-Germain based Vodka Martini. Now that was nice. We hit the floor around 11 o’clock so things were just starting to heat up. Tables were crowded so I shied away and join my wife on some slots. We had a good time for a couple of hours and decided to call it a night. At the end of the evening I managed to keep my losses to a paltry $23. My wife refused to tell me how much she lost. I guess that’s why we got the room invite 🙂

Wynn Lobby

The next morning we wake well rested. These beds are comfy, supportive, and super luxurious, making it very difficult to get out of. I wonder where do you actually find beds like this in the real world? Next time I’ve got a pull off the sheet to get the tag and model number because this was a wonderful night sleep. Tonight we dine at the Country Club restaurant. The SW, the steakhouse at the Wynn, is one of my favorite spots in the world to eat. The food is great, service is fantastic, and who can beat the lakeside show. Giant flowers, as in 30 feet in diameter popup out of the man made lake, dancing around to music. Bodies breach and submerge, colorful marionettes dance about, its an amazing dinner show.

So I wanted to try something new. The Country Club is  is what you would expect it to be a restaurant Located on a golf course. Wynn has the only golf course technically “on the strip”, but believe or not, there are 5 golf courses within a mile radius of the strip. That’s wild! Who knew!?! White linen tables, dark wood sculpted trim and attentive waiters make the interior. And great waiters they are. Very attentive, and get this, when I asked how many Scallops were in the order, he responded 4. Then my wife mentioned that she would give me a bite or two of her steak, and the waiter immediately offers to split the orders and make us both a mini surf-n-turf! Awesome! The NY Strip had the perfect char to it, the Scallops were plump and juicy, it was a perfect meal. It’s a medium size restaurant I would estimate it seats about 50, compared to Cheesecake Factory, I guess that’s actually small. But what it does is it creates a very cozy and intimate environment and provides the perfect background for a nice relaxing dinner. This is a nice breath of fresh air that let you sit back and relax for a bit and enjoy our wine. Dinner was delightful, dessert was wonderful, but now it’s time to head back to the tables!

Oktoberfest! Vegas Style!

October 15, 2017by Christopher FreemanNo Comments

I can’t tell you how many years I’ve sat there at the intersection of Harmon Ave and Paradise Rd. heading to the Hard Rock Hotel, and I look over to my right and see a moderate sized white building with a sign that says “Hofbräuhaus”. And I would think to myself, who even goes in there, Hofbräuhaus? German food in Vegas? Ok…whatever. With all these high end luxury glamour hotels, who has time for some run down Hofbräuhaus?

Answer? Everybody!

We happen to be in Vegas this for October, which just happens to be Oktoberfest. (If you must know, I stole the idea of Oktoberfest for my birthday month. If you can celebrate beer for a month, then you should definitely be able to celebrate your birthday for a month.) It’s mid-October, we go in and what I see absolutely amazes me.

This Hofbräuhaus in Las Vegas, Nevada… middle of the desert… is a beautiful replica of the original Hofbräuhaus in Munich, Germany.  The original was built in 1589 by Duke Maximiliann I. Amazingly enough, it wasn’t until 308 years later, in 1897, when  Ludwig I took over, that they actually opened the doors to the public. Previously it was a private bierhaus for the workers at the brewery. But when the brewery moved to the suburbs, really, they decided to repurpose the vast hall left behind. One of the first examples gentrification!  This is what Vegas does so well: Hofbräuhaus, Paris, Bellagio, Palazzo, all of them are replicas of the originals from Europe brought to the desert in living color. As we walk through these hotels and casinos in Vegas, I wonder how many people really take into account the effort it takes to replicate those great buildings. Even down to the ornate ceiling paint of the ‘sexpartite’, or six-parted supports for the ceiling. Sexpartite refers to the medieval Roman-inspired Saxon architecture of the vaulted support structure.

Not the wild Sex-parties that happen after guzzling stein after stein after stein of beer!

Once inside all the tables are communal tables were you sit down with any and everybody. Just our luck, we are set at a table with Drew and his buddies from Positive Proximity in Burbank, CA, my old hometown. They work for a small digital company and were already two steins deep into the evenings activities. Nancy and I did our best to catch up and the end result was a rousing evening of laughing, storytelling, Oompah bands, a chugging contest or two and something else that I simply refuse to remember.

I guess there some tradition in Germany, which explains Germans, where they feel paddling you is a public event to be shared by all. I seem to vaguely remember a girl bringing over Jägermeister shots, and I remember watching other people getting paddled and thinking that is crazy. The good thing is, the next morning I woke up not feeling any effect of the paddling at all. Which leads me to believe that maybe it didn’t happen. Maybe was all just a dream. And until I find the video I guess I’ll never know. Wait, just found it… oh you people are sick!

Guy Fieri’s Vegas

October 14, 2017by Christopher FreemanNo Comments

If you are on a diet and looking to eat healthy, Vegas may not be a destination for you. With so many 5-star restaurants here, the greatest concentration on the planet, this is a foodie mecca unlike anywhere else! Now, if you just want to try some of the wildest tastiest stuff, and you dig Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, then head over to The LINQ, turn left and step into Guy Fieri’s Vegas Kitchen. It’s a reflection of Guy’s style: down home comfort food thrown together after a late night beer run. All the burgers are double up on ingredients and the flavors smash together like chips on a burger for a crunchy childhood revisit. Remember when you used to think, this is great…but better with [insert favorite weird food here] on your food stuff? Guy does. And he does it well.

All your favorites are here: Fried chicken, burgers, fries, burgers, mac and cheese burgers. And don’t forget burgers. Oh…and a taco…and wings! OK, that’s enough, I can only eat so much, and so much is what I want. For our breakfast, we stopped in at the perfect breakfast hour of 1:00 in the afternoon. The line out front was easily an hour wait, but if just the 2 of us, we can make it if we try, we slithered passed the crowd and grabbed a seat at the bar. Score! And since it’s breakfast time, then anything that mentioned egg needs to be ordered. And where you have egg, you have bacon. But Guy kicks it up a notch by deep frying the bacon to give it a fried-chicken-like crunchy taste that would stand on its own as a Mayor of Flavor Town candidate. Add cheese, gravy and tomato, and yes, damn good!

Unfortunately, for every Yin, there’s a Yang. How could you go wrong with a Mac and Cheese burger. The name says it all. The Mac was too light, flavorless and not fun. I simply slid off the burger with every bite, and tasted more like Kraft Velveeta than something Guy might whip up. And why wouldn’t you put the Mac under the patty to hold in in place better. The saving grace is that even with the Mac dropping off, the burger was still tasty. Guy always love a good does of pepper to flavor things up, and its just right for this burger. Add 2 strips of bacon (next time make it 3!), sliced lettuce and that fires tray, and I was still having a good time here. The office, as I call it, is setup like a sports bar so big screens all around to provide plenty of entertainment. But since we were up until 3am the night before, and Cosmo was giving away Tequila like its out of style, time for a Bloody Mary. And Oh Mary! Its a breakfast Mary with 2 slices of bacon, sausage, pickles, lemon (to kill the taste of last night) oranges and olives. Hell, that’s breakfast right there!

So it was a good time. The bartenders are fun and friendly, Alex was awesome, the place is lively. Sitting at the bar removes the wait, but sitting on the patio puts you in the heart of the action. It faces towards the passage between The LINQ and Harrah’s with the Carnaval Court in the background adding live music. Thousands walk pass this point, so you’re bound to see something you shouldn’t see, or can’t unsee. (Really, you thought it was ok to wear THAT!?! In public!?!) It’s a festive atmosphere that adds to the flavors of the food. You don’t just go there, you become a participant, observer and observed. It’s Vegas baby!

The Delano: As in Roosevelt

October 13, 2017by Christopher FreemanNo Comments

Remember that commercial about the guy who gets hit by a bus, ends up in heaven with all the cookies he can eat? But when he reaches for the milk cartons, they’re empty! Ha ha, you’re not in heaven! That’s the way I kind of felt about the Delano. Upon arrival of the Delano, which is attached to the Mandalay Bay, we pull up and see a Bugatti Veyron in the valet parking. Oh yeah that’s my car. This is the kind of luxury and class and I’m looking for. Fortune may smile on me this visit after all.

It was 2 o’clock in the morning, and fortunately a valet was available to take our bags up. I walk through the front doors, between the two halves of a 62-ton metaquartzite boulder. Interesting…no fascinating! Typical Vegas, it’s so sublime, and yet, how many floors can even support 62-tons, let alone have a design team split the boulder, and place it just right. To read more, click here for the Best of Vegas story. We get to the front desk, we check in, the hostess was a little snippy. I don’t mind so much I was just thinking about this cool entrance and that Bugatti. Vegas, baby Vegas! This Delano is total hipster chic that is tangible and appealing. We get up to our floor, a cool hallway, interesting photographs lining the walls with a really nice design. Old Vegas and hip desert scenics. I’m thinking this place is the bomb! My only previous brush with the Delano, pronounced Del-la-noe, as in Franklin D, US President #32, not DE-lan-no, like the Italian getaway in South Beach, Miami. That place is dope! I love that lobby bar tucked off to the side behind the 30 foot curtains flowing through the entryway. Perfect for South Beach on a perfect summer’s eve.

Delano Living Room

So we get to the room, we walk in and nice! The room is decked out in soft white through and through. The wall, the flooring, the furniture. Along the left wall a good 42 inch wall-mounted TV, business desk underneath with minimalist gold legs. A comfortable looking couch with chaise. Oh look there, a wet bar! Sink, faucet, a couple of wine glasses standing on glass shelves. A mini fridge underneath. Looking good so far. Hmmm, what’s behind this door? Closet maybe? Wait, what? This is the bathroom? Theres no shower! Wait, don’t tell me, are you kidding me? A second bathroom? I’ve never been in a hotel in Las Vegas that had two bathrooms! This is awesome! I’m in heaven!

We call down to the valet to bring our bags up. He’s a very courteous guy, and interestingly enough, his name is Curtis. Really cool guy, he steps out to get us a bucket of ice. Time to chill the Courtage! That was very nice of him. I leave a nice tip. I take the bags into the curved bedroom to unzip, so I can unpack and put my clothes into the dresser drawers. I always like to make myself at home when I travel, so I completely unpack and put all my clothes in the dresser drawers…where are the drawers? Wait… where are the drawers!?! Seriously, where are the drawers!?!?! Oh oh… this ain’t heaven!

As luxurious and well laid out as this place is designed, there are no drawers here. And to add insult to injury, we open the closet doors, and it’s half the size of most Las Vegas luxury rooms. How can this be? There is one small drawer at the base of the closet, and I pull it out, it’s only about 18 inches deep. Are you kidding me? We upgraded to a scenic suite which has the cool wrap around windows, king size bed with a ultra lux headboard that was oh so visually appealing. But no drawers!

And to add additional insult to injury, there’s only one luggage rack. Of course it goes to my wife. Thank God the bed has a foot bench to put my suitcase.

We head down to the casino for a little wine down late-night action at the slots. When we come back up it’s time to hit the bed. I’m not in heaven! The bed feels like it’s been hit several times before, like, a lot of times before! wink wink! You can literally see the depression in the mattress. Looks like this they have been slept on for quite some time, and since this is Vegas, by quite a few people. Wink wink.

The next morning we wake and hit the shower. And yes, we’re not in heaven. They didn’t even spring for shower gel. Just bar soap! Can you believe it? Good thing I had my Laura Tonatto shower gel from Milan packed in my toiletries bag. Yes you never know when you’re going to need gel, even in luxury high rise hotels in Vegas.

One aspect we really did enjoy about The Hotel (get it?) is the Skyfall lounge. It’s located on the 54th floor, with a private entrance, and views to die for! Since The Delano is at the southern end of the strip, you get to see all the other hotels in a single view. And in the summer, at evening, with those desert sunsets, the view is amazing. I highly recommend making reservations around 30 mins prior to sunset to get settled in for the show. We were a little, and since it was fall, a little chilly as well, and had prior reservations so we missed the show. But next summer, I’ll make sure I’m on time and you’ll have some nice pics.

The bar is done up in a deep blue-purple theme, with wood and neon green highlights. Think Jetsons meet Prince. There are these big bulbous globular rings that are lit internally and provide and soft ambient lighting effect. Like I said, I cant wait to check this place out at sunset and into the evening. The crowd is upscale to match the futuristic feel of the place. It seems like a great place to meet some pretty interesting, in a good way, people here. New age intellectuals channeling the ancient desert energy in a posh hot spot.

Overall, the room is built more for an overnight traveler, or ultra highrollers who don’t lug clothes around. But just buy new clothes wherever they go. If I’m a business traveler, this is perfect to have the place all to myself. But for a family man on a weekend getaway, not my bag baby. I give the Delano high marks for its design and appeall. But the lack of drawers definitely left a sour taste. Very disappointing. I did don’t feel as if I could kick back and relax. Put my feet up and sit a spell, not with my clothes still sitting in their bag. I’m sorry Delano, I call this one, one and done. It’s not you, it’s me.

Yo Cosmo: The Cosmopolitan Las Vegas

July 22, 2017by Christopher FreemanNo Comments

So another Vegas trip, another Vegas adventure. This time we headed off to the Cosmopolitan Hotel.

The Cosmopolitan is an ultra urban, ultra sleek, total hipster hang out kind of place. The Cosmopolitan sets between the Bellagio and the Aria/Vdara/City Center complex. And uniquely enough it’s not attached to any of those. This is due mainly to the fact that the Bellagio was not part of the M life organization. As the Vdara, which sits behind the Cosmopolitan, connects to Bellagio via an internal tunnel, you would think they would just build a tunnel from the Cosmopolitan connecting the three.

But either way, once you check in to the Cosmopolitan, you are immediately hit by the glossy, glitzy entryway. Once in the room, that theme continues. The Cosmopolitan is a great space with the rooms larger than most common rooms. It reminds me of the old days of the Hard Rock Hotel being the blinged out boudoir of choice. Now those older rich guys have moved closer to the strip where the action is.

The rooms, equipped with wet sinks, microwaves, two TVs, a sitting area. This makes the rooms incredibly cozy to stay in, more like your little apartment and less a hotel room. All the finishes are top notch and high quality. I love the microwave, I don’t need an oven, but to heat up some of those left overs the next morning, and then relax on the couch, awesome! Especially in the fall when football is on Sunday and you’re nursing a hangover.

I love the step-through-shower concept, and will actually put it to use in some of the homes I’m remodeling. The sit down Jacuzzi tubs are awesome. Sit back and relax after a long day at the pool or after winning a fortunate on the slot machines downstairs. It could happen! Plus whats better than sitting in your tub, and looking over to the Planet Hollywood Hotel and Britney Spears images on the giant screen across the street? Way cool!

I love the idea of a balcony on a room, and Cosmopolitan is fantastic where not only do you have a balcony, but it’s all over looking the Las Vegas strip. Our particular balcony allowed us to look down at the Boulevard Pool. We could also look across to Planet Hollywood, and down the strip to Paris Paris or up to Aria.

The hotel continues Hard Rock Hotel purple theme. Oh Prince, where art thou? The beds are extremely comfortable, good closet space, fantastic bathroom set up with the walk in shower, make that walk through shower, Where you walk through the shower to get to the tub. It’s a cool set up definitely unique definitely 4-star. But if it does have one nuance, it’s that it has no drawers. Which is OK, since 9 times out of 10 you’re clothes are either in your suitcase are hanging on the closet rack anyway.

Momofuku! Let me stop there.

July 22, 2017by Christopher FreemanNo Comments

I first came across Momofuku in New York. My wife and I were there for her birthday, and I want to find a top notch foodie restaurant for her. Unfortunately I waited until the last minute and the place was reserved for the next two months. That’s the popularity of such high end restaurants like Momofuku. But then why wouldn’t it be popular, the guy’s got 2 Michelin stars, and the restaurant is awarded “Best of…” in so many categories, including Bon Appetit and Gourmet Traveler.

We started with Crab Deviled Eggs. I love love love ’em! Deviled Eggs, but adding some salmon roe, and topping it off shredded crab meat and crispy Bonito, this sounded awesome! And it was. I know, in a Asian themed Michelin spot and I choose Deviled Eggs. Oh well, I’m not THAT adventurous, I just like good stuff regardless of the theme.

After zooming through our first glasses of wine, the entrees started coming out. She ordered the Rotisserie Chicken & Fried Bones. Tender juicy chicken thigh pieces and crispy fried wings that if you were adventurous enough, or hungry enough, you could bite right through to the bone. If only Buffalo Wild Wings were this tasty.

I got the Smoked Pork Chop. What I found interesting was that instead of a huge pork chop, it comes out sliced and tender as can be. A peach on top, and rye cognac broth underneath, it was BBQ heaven. Soft and tender, a delicate balance of flavors across a wide palette of textures. And huge servings!

To accompany the entrees, there was no way I could pass up on the Crispy Potatoes. Tender little fingerings, fried to perfection, light and airy, then topped with a truffle sour cream, shredded Parmesan cheese, chives. I didn’t even notice the truffle Tofu blended in. I may have been overwhelmed by the size. How are we going to eat all of this!?! We were so stuff at this point, we took almost half back to the room for breakfast the following day.

Las Vegas

Kelso Depot

July 22, 2017by Christopher FreemanNo Comments

On a trip to Las Vegas, our return was met with an insane amount of traffic. By the time we got to Baker, Google Maps told us to take a detour and rerouted us around several accidents along interstate 15. We get off at Baker, took a left and headed down Kelbaker Road. An isolated stretch of highway, partially maintained over the years, that seem to just run on and on and on. I had no idea where we were, other than the satellite view of our map of course, nothing to see for miles, until we rounded a bend and there stood an oasis of palm trees and a tiled roof. Of course at this point, I had been on the road for the last four hours of traffic, so I had no intention whatsoever of stopping, but I did see a sign, Kelso Depot, so I made a mental note and kept driving.

A year later I’m driving from Palm Springs to Las Vegas for a weekend at the Cosmopolitan. Realizing the drive was going to be a long one, I take the more venturous route up Hwy 62 to Kelbaker Road, and suddenly my memory springs to life. Kelso Depot. I remember that spot and I anticipate revisiting this isolated location. I enter the Mojave National Preserve, and realize what our ancestors braved through to settle Southern California. This is isolated wilderness with no indication whatsoever of civilization to the north south east or west. Imagine coming across this in a buck wagon and an old pair of trousers. Not the BMW air conditioned comfort that I’m not used to now. A few hours later, we arrive at the Kelso Depot and it is beautifully maintained. A true oasis in the desert. There is absolutely nothing else here, other than this train stop.

The train station originally opened in 1905, then rebuilt in 1923, serving as a stop for steam locomotives moving people and mining materials to the Los Angeles area. Back in the day, mining was the lifeblood of Southern California, and the Mojave desert is littered with remnants of this. Boron, a small town 2 hours drive west of here, is home to 20 Mule Team Borax, a cleaner first mined and produced in 1891, and is still available on store shelves today. 45 minutes east is Nipton, a mining town long dead, that has been purchased and is planned as a marijuana Disneyland.

Kelso Depot is under the protection of the National Park Service, it is maintained immaculately as both museum and memory of a time long gone. The train tracks still exist, but I don’t think the train has come down these tracks in decades. The depot serves more as I stop over for people needing to use the restroom, and as a curiosity spot for tourists and hobbyist researching old Southern California and its mining past. I step inside and I’m met by park ranger, Mark, who has a dusty, cool smile on this 112 degree day. I look around, and there’s what’s left of the old Kelso restaurant, now a coffee counter with a small menu of burgers, fries, tacos and chips. But no one seems to be manning the grill, so I step over to the tourist rack and purchase a Kelso Depot poster for nostalgia sake.

Back outside under the palm trees I take a look around, and notice a sign identifying the old location of the Kelso jail. I love the idea that this jail is stated as built to “confine drunks and other unruly individuals,” namely me in a couple more hours,. The jail was built back in the mid-1940s but is long gone. I’m sure somebody will have a grand idea to use some reclaimed lumber to rebuild it to its original specifications. That will be cool to see. Maybe they can take the backside of the old post office across the street. This abandoned desolate little building is a reminder of how small we used to be. This stop had a post office, and I’m sure at some point a bustling a little town built around it. Now it’s just a leftover abandoned little shack as the trains have stopped rolling and mines have stopped producing and everyone just takes the 15 from LA to Vegas.

Thank you to the National Park Service for preserving this memory.

Las Vegas Heat

Whoa! Now thats hot!!! I’ve been in the normal Vegas 104 degrees  or so, and actually I find it quite refreshing. But this weekend, hold the press! We started the evening…yes evening… at 104.

The next day the temp hits 114 degrees. Good time to hit the outlet and sweat to the oldies! This is officially now the hottest day temp I’ve ever experienced in Vegas, make that anywhere, beating the previous record of 112 in Lake Havasu back in 2003. But at least it’s a dry heat!

Then Sunday coming home,115, whoa! The hottest I’ve ever been anywhere anytime. Beating yesterday’s temperature by 1 degree, but at least we are in air conditioned comfort driving home. It can’t get any hotter than this.

Oops, we just hit Baker, California, gateway to Death Valley. And guess what? 118!!! It just got hotter!

The interesting thing here, I figured my thermometer must be malfunctioning, so when we get to Baker, the World Famous Baker Thermometer was actually working, and lo and behold, it confirms the same temperature! I step out of the car to take a confirmation photo, and admittedly, the heat was absolutely suffocating. I could just imagine the settlers coming out through this. In heavy cotton denim and buckboard wagons!?! Or moreso, what about people in the middle east? Remember years ago they talked about holding the World Cup in 112 degree heat. I could not imagine playing anything other than an iPod in this.

Verified by the Baker Needle, the huge tourist attraction thermometer that never lies. To be honest I didn’t even think the dam thing even worked. Your tax dollars at work.

Giada: Great views…and a big ass rib!

June 24, 2017by Christopher FreemanNo Comments

Giada opens her first Vegas restaurant, which seems so cliché, but is a much bigger statement than you may realize. In the land of Mario Batali and Gordon Ramsay and the heavy hitters like Joël Robuchon and Nobu, she stands as…well you guessed it: The only woman. #metoo

But her menu is anything but. A fusion of classic Italian and easy Californian, her most photographed dish is the huge, juicy but oh so tasty BONE-IN Rib-Eye. And the BONE-IN is emphasized because…well… it’s emphasized! The bone measures around 18 inches, and the rib-eye, tastes as big as the bone. Tender, tasty, and dripping with a perfectly over-medium egg on top, the dish hits the spot for any carnivore who is tempted by the menu description.

But in the fairness of reviewing, one of my favorite aspects of Giada is getting a table or booth along the Western wall just before sunset. This way you have time to settle in, order a fine bottle of wine, order from the menu, and just as the food arrives, there it is… that Vegas sunset. In the summer, the sky lights up in a beautiful palette of subtle desert colors…and then Laurence arrives at your table with that gorgeous Rib-Eye, the Lemon Spaghetti for your date, your guests are settled with the Rigatoni and the Branzino… and all is right with the world. And then he brings that huge pepper grinder, and you realize you are somewhere special.

You feel the royalty of ancient Rome seeping in as your take a bite of your entree, and look up through the 20ft windows at Caesar’s Palace’s Nobu wing, standing majestic. If only ancient Rome ate this well. And then as you’re relaxed through mother nature’s light show, the sensual sounds of the live music begin seeping in as you realize you’ve never heard a cello play Rhianna. Interesting. Cool. Easy.

But now the fun begins. Desert time! If you’re digging the Italian theme, then how could you have anything other than a Chocolate Hazelnut Macaron with Raspberries. Time for champagne to wrap things up. Yeah, probably should have ordered to begin with, but Vegas, baby, Vegas!

And to wrap things up and savor the memories, step over to the live action photo booth to get an selfie in the original fashion.

Las Vegas: A Mandalay Bay Stay

June 15, 2017by Christopher FreemanNo Comments

So here we go again, another birthday trip to Las Vegas. It’s a tradition started some 25 years ago, and I just love going to Las Vegas with for a weekend during my birthday month celebration. Yes, Birthday Month! Because when you’re my age, one day is just not enough.

So this trip we had to Mandalay Bay Resort and Beach Hotel. The number one luxury feature of Mandalay Bay is time! The fact that Mandalay Bay is pretty much the first hotel you come to as you enter the Vegas Strip means you don’t have to deal with the traffic of the Las Vegas strip. This is a great advantage that Mandalay Bay has over other hotels. Mandalay Bay is connected on three sides with the Four Seasons Hotel, the Delano and the Luxor Hotel. This allows you to walk in air conditioned comfort to at least two other hotels, although the Four Seasons is not a gambling hotel, it is luxurious and nice to walk through and a great dinner location.

Mandalay is the former capital of Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. Myanmar is a small country north of Indonesia east of Vietnam. And that’s whats lost on Mandalay Bay. When you pull up to Mandalay Bay, you do notice that is lush, hidden behind lots of greenery, but no true indication of it Southeast Asian theme. As you enter Mandalay Bay through the lush greenery, you may catch a glimpse of tiger statues and other Thai, Indonesian, Vietnamese influences, but they are very low-key and not very prominent, so you really don’t have quite an idea of what you’re really getting into. Upon entering Mandalay Bay, did you notice that palm tree and a slight wicker thing. Strips of marble, and beautifully laid marble it is, are highlighted by brown strips of a textured marble to resemble the wicker themes from Southeast Asia. You’ll also notice that there are an excess of shutters surrounding the crown molding and door moldings of the lobby area. And this theme is carried throughout the rooms. There are large ceiling fans throughout the lobby, but that is the only true semblance of southeast Asia here. The dining area is your typical Vegas style, the buffet and lunch dining areas have about as much sense of tropical fare as south east Florida. I would venture to say Myanmar had their theme long before Key West did.

What I do love about Mandalay Bay is it spaciousness. The ceilings are high, the casino floor is huge, as are the restaurants, and the room. The rooms in the Mandalay are a very nice size, and the bathrooms were very easy for my wife and I to navigate. A large single mirror straddles a dual sink. Built-in lighting provides a nice soft glow and even lighting that reflects both a separate shower and a relaxing bath tub. Unfortunately the bathtub is not a Jacuzzi tub, something which would put Mandalay Bay above other hotels on the strip. But the rooms are comfortable and very convenient.

My one recommendation upon making a reservation and checking in as to request a non-joining the room. That’s a room that has a joining door between your neighbor room, which is fine when you have kids or family to be able to share open the door and share both spaces. But when the people next to you are someone else’s kids, and not your kids, the spacing under the door allows every yell, laugh and giggle they utter to seep into your room. Not cool. Specially when you come straggling in at four in the morning, and they’re getting up for breakfast at 8 AM.

But the bed is cushy, the table provides a nice little office setting, with outlet for AC, USB, HDMI, and VGA plugs. One thing I truly like enjoy this time was as soon as I plug say HDMI cable in from my computer, I was able to watch my Formula 1 racing on the large 42″ HD TV on the wall. This was perfect

The shops at Mandalay our typical Vegas, although one aspect I truly appreciate is that the sundry shop is right at the base of the elevators. The elevators are located in a central triad broken off into 30 floor increments. Make a left off the elevator and there’s a sundry full of water, spirits, beer and assorted bandages. After all this is Vegas. Another genius move Mandalay the house that I appreciate pretty much more than any other hotel in Vegas, The Beach.

The beach is Mandalay Bay’s swimming pool. But more than a swimming pool, it’s an actual beach! Complete with scorching hot sand and rolling waves. No not the North Beach Hang 10 kind of waves, but low rolling waves, the kind you would find in southeast Asia. The entry to the beach is actually located one level before the main floor of the hotel. This is great because doing so allows elevators to go all the way down to the beach level past the main floor to the beach level. You walk out of the elevator take a left and out of the to the pool area. The genius here is that when you are headed to the beach or coming from the beach, you walk directly to the elevators without having to walk through the casino. I don’t mind walking to the pool from the casino going there but after spending all day getting sloppy drunk and still went in my swim trunks I hate to walk back. But this also lends itself to sandy elevators by late day. Oh well, I guess just like the beaches of Southeast Asia.
